How Often Should You Get a Massage?

It would be great to get a massage every day of your life. The benefits would be many, and you really can’t have too many massages. But massage is not real cheap, so it would get expensive quickly. It would also be hard to schedule and there would be other logistical problems. Short of marrying a massage therapist who has a great attitude, it would be very hard to actually do.

There are many benefits to massage is well known. The most common benefit is relief from stress. Massages help you relax, and that is good for you on many levels. Injuries can heal faster with massage as it increases blood flow to the injured area. It can also help the skin, muscle tone, and there is just a general good feeling one gets from a massage.

Since doing it daily is not a realistic option for most of us, how often is enough? The answer depends on what you are trying to do.

Just for general relief from stress, a monthly massage would probably be fine. More would be better, but with that you would probably get a lot of benefit. If you are getting therapy for chronic pain, a massage every week or two would be a good idea. If you are injured and getting massage therapy as treatment, you might get a few treatments a week for a specific amount of time.

One secret to understand is that massage therapy is cumulative in its effects. The relaxation is good, and relaxing more at regular intervals has sort of a cumulative effect on your body. Some therapists suggest regular treatments, and they say regular massages are even more important than the frequency of the massage.

Pay attention to your body, and listen to what it says. When you feel your body tensing up again, or you are not as relaxed as you were after the last massage, it is probably time for another massage. Discuss the options with your massage therapist, who can help you determine the best way to proceed to get the most benefit from massage.
